Obituary of Helen Silinsky
We are sad to announce that Helen Silinsky (Baba) peacefully passed away on September 15, 2023.
Loving mother of Christine (David) Swire. Beloved grandmother "Baba" of Sarah and Evan. Sister of Marcel Lesyk (late Olga), Morris (Suzanne) Lesyk . Well loved Aunt of Stephan, Pierre, Natasha, Nick and Tina.
Helen was born into a proud Ukrainian/Canadian family in the charming town of Amos, Quebec. She moved to Toronto in her early 20's learned English, taught as a French teacher, and fought for the rights of others in her career as Financial Manager at OPSEU for over 30 years. She is the recipient of many awards and accolades. After retirement, Helen moved to Ottawa and was the number one fan of both her grandchildren, never missing a recital or sporting event.
Helen was not only a trailblazer in her career but also a pioneering force in the feminist movement. She inspired and empowered countless individuals through her ability to break glass ceilings and dedication to gender equality. Even though Helen would say “I was just doing my job" her legacy as a feminist icon will continue to inspire future generations.
Helen found solace and joy in her garden, where she cultivated beauty and tranquility. Her creative spirit knew no bounds, as she expressed herself through various forms of art, needlepoint, and crocheting. Her artistic endeavors were inspired by her world travels. Her love for Ukrainian culture and traditions brought endless joy to our family, especially during the holidays.
Helen had an extraordinary gift for spreading happiness wherever she went. Let us remember the profound impact she had on us all and strive to honor her legacy by spreading love, strength and joy, just as she did throughout her remarkable life.
In loving memory of Helen our Baba. Forever in our hearts.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated professionals at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice and the palliative care team at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, whose unwavering care and compassion provided comfort in her final days. We also thank her team of Nurses, PSWs, at Bridlewood Trails Retirement Home for their exceptional care and support.
