James Del Rizzo posted a condolence

My name is James Del Rizzo and I send my condolences to the Loucks family. I had the privilege of knowing johnny and his father Mr. Loucks. Johnny was my friend at Whitehaven PS. And Mr. Loucks was my principal at D. Roy Kennedy School. Both were very kind people. Only years later at a celebration for a family member at Villa Lucia did I bump into Mr. Loucks when he told me that my friend Johnny from when I was little, was his son. Mr. Loucks, you were a terrific principal with your strength, compassion and kindness. I thank you very much sir.

When principal at Hopewell John changed our lives forever. He authorised a cross-boundary transfer for our daughter and changed her schooling success, accommodating her learning disability. She eventually got a college diploma and has lead a very successful life to date. I no longer had three children in three schools and started to be a parent volunteer which led me to life long friendships. All our children benefited from John's leadership as they passed thtough Hopewell school.I became an educational assistant and enjoyed that for 16 years before moving to BC. Thank you for livestreaming the fuheral service. I was able to say my goodbyes from across the couhtry. Doris and all your family, please accept my sincere condolences. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was a student at Vincent Massey PS from 1965 to 68. We had the best teachers in the city and you and John were the best of the best. Miss Dewar, I was lucky enough to have you as a teacher, the best and favourite of all my school years and John as a coach who took a team of misfits to within one game of the city school championship.
Miss Dewar you and your family have my deepest condolences

I was a student at Vincent Massey in the sixties and had Mr. Loucks for history in grade 7. I remember him well. As I think back, he must have been fresh out of teachers college, but he was a terrific teacher and I enjoyed his class immensely. I also remember Miss Dewar from Vincent Massey days, and how at a certain point she became Mrs. Loucks. In reading the obituary and comments posted here from their friends, I was struck by the mention of their boat, the Laura Grace, a lovely old Shepherd I have seen over the years. This morning I reread a piece Mr. Loucks had written for the Antique and Classic Boat Society about his acquisition and restoration of the boat, in which he made mention of Aylings boatyard. I feel badly to find out now, too late, that in my own 20-odd years at Aylings with our family boat, and in many years of membership in absentia with the Manotick boat club, that we never crossed paths, or if we did, that I did not realize who he was. There would have been much to talk about, boats and Vincent Massey. My deepest condolences, Miss Dewar, to you and your family.

John and Doris have been part of our annual summer parties for many years. We always enjoyed times spent together, including our day cruising in John's prized boat on the Tay River. John, you will be missed.

Doris: I recall all the good times we had at Vincent Massey in the 60s. You and John were the bright lights on staff and we were all the better for seeing you every school day. Your sparkle lightened our spirits and helped us all through grey periods and John was a steadying influence as well as a dry humorist.

John was the finest principal and education leader I ever encountered in my career. He fostered a culture of well-ordered respect and responsibility along with warmth and acceptance, which made D. Roy Kennedy a great place for students, staff and parents alike. I have always been grateful that I had the opportunity to work with him.
My deepest condolences to Doris, Tim and all of the family at this time of loss.

John was an amazing principal, second to none, and a caring and compassionate person. He was readily available to chat with staff, students and parents. He had a great sense of humor and we shared many a laugh throughout his years at D. Roy Kennedy. He was always fair minded in his decision making and quick to defend his staff in challenging situations.
Very sad to hear of his passing, but happy to have served under his leadership. I considered him a mentor and a friend.
Thinking of you, Doris, and your family at this difficult time.

We are dumbfounded and devastated that such a larger-than-life friend has passed away. John was someone, along with his lifelong partner, Doris, we always looked forward to seeing at a golf outing or gathering of friends. He always offered a warm greeting and a moment of humour. John's big, genuine smile and laser eye contact made you feel like you were the most important person in the crowd. We will miss him very much. Deep condolences to Doris and family. Sending much light and love.
