Obituary of André William Payant (La grenouille qui rit)

Né à Matachewan le 19 octobre 1936. Décédé le 21 janvier 2024 à la suite d’une chirurgie pour une hanche fracturée.

 

Predeceased by his parents Alice (née McFadden) and Thomas, his siblings Marie-Paule (Norman), Richard (Judy), Gaston (Gail) and Normand, and his niece Natalie. Survived by his dutiful and forgiving daughter Melanie (Heather), his loving siblings Roger, Michelle (Ron) and Suzanne, and 13 nieces and nephews.

 

André a déménagé à Vanier avec sa famille à l’âge de six ans. Il a fréquenté l’École André-Laurendeau et a commencé sa carrière en tant qu’entrepreneur principal chez Richard and B. A. Ryan. Dans sa trentaine, il est devenu fonctionnaire au sein de Statistique Canada. Il est ensuite entré en fonction à Transports Canada où il a été éventuellement recruté pour participer au Programme d’élite Cours et affectations de perfectionnement, programme qui lui a permis de faire un stage de six mois à Povungnituk (maintenant Puvirnituq). Il a terminé sa carrière au Bureau des passeports en 1997.

 

André was a difficult man who nevertheless possessed many compelling qualities: he was bright, curious, clever, funny, hardworking, and handsome to boot. He was a voracious reader of non fiction works, a writer, a defender of Francophone and Indigenous interests and rights, a merciless prankster, and soup maker extraordinaire. His ardent love of trees led him to plant hundreds of Pine, Tamarack, Black Walnut, Gingko and Butternut (species at risk) on his beloved 10 acres near Limoges. He could fix or “improve” anything with a few scraps and supplies: MacGyver had nothing on André Payant! He enjoyed canoeing and downhill skiing in his younger days, travelled to India and the Turks and Caicos, and shared his home with many a great dog.

 

J’envoie un gros merci au personnel hors pair de l’Hôpital Montfort qui ont témoigné tellement de respect, de patience et d’amitié à mon père, particulièrement Roxanne, Élizabeth, Chantal, et Myriam, ainsi qu’à tous les infirmiers/ières et préposés/ées impliqués dans ses soins.

 

Je tiens aussi à remercier du fond du cœur Christine et Karine des Services de soutien à domicile et en milieu communautaire Champlain qui tenaient son bien-être à cœur et qui m’ont tant écouté et guidé, ainsi que M. Jean Saint-Pierre, un voisin devenu ami ayant témoigné à mon père un esprit charitable sans limites.

Last, but in no way least, I extend my deepest heartfelt gratitude to my mother Pamela and my partner Heather for their indefatigable love and support throughout the trials of the last four years.

Note that a bursary or scholarship for an Indigenous student in a forestry program at La Cité collégiale will eventually be set up.

 

There will be no funeral. A scattering of André’s ashes at locations of his choosing will take place in the spring or summer.
