Obituary of Ronald Hembry McCaughey
Our Dear Father is finally at rest after a long battle with Dementia. Ronald Hembry McCaughey passed peacefully in the early morning of April 10, 2024 in his sleep in his 90th year.
He is survived by his 4 children, Michael (Dorothy), Kevin (Yingru), Bruce (Vanessa) and Carolyn; 9 grandchildren, Katie (Tyler), David (Gabriella), Brittany, Liam, Erin, Danielle (Dana), Matthew (Marisa), Holly (Adam), and Samantha; and 7 great grandchildren, Amelia, Lucas, Penelope, Declan, Phoenix, Jayden and Addison as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ronald is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (nee Ezard), brother John (Sheila), sister Christine (Hazen) and granddaughter Shannon (Adam).
Ronald loved life and brought that excitement to whatever he did. He attended Trinity College School (TCS) where he played goalie on the hockey team and trumpet in the marching band. He attended Queen's University through the RCAF's ROTP program and after graduating in Electrical Engineering he joined the Air Force and flew Harvard II and IV planes.
He met Barbie on a blind date. They fell in love and spent the next several years raising their young family. He moved to IBM where he spent the rest of his career in Marketing until retirement. Ron shared his interests with his children. He enjoyed the outdoors whether it was in a canoe in Algonquin, hiking or on the slopes. He loved music and sang in the church choir. He was an avid golfer his whole life. Ron taught his children how to fix things around the house, to drive, to dance and to play golf. His retirement was spent enjoying his family and friends, bringing his sense of humor and hearty laugh to every game of bridge and gourmet dinner. He also volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society (Daffodil Campaign) and Elections Canada.
Ronald was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, Papa and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the Embassy West Senior Living Home for the wonderful care he received over the last few years of his life. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Ronald's name to The Dementia Society of Ottawa, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or one of your choice. A private memorial with family and close friends is planned for later in June.
