My husband Al with Footsteps Of Canadian Heroes Memorial Tour had the Honour of meeting Sgt. Roly Armitage in Aug of 2023 at the Constance Bay Legion, where he signed our Door Of Honour. We also offered Roly a place on our Service Not Forgotten Memorial Wall to put a picture of his best friend Roy who was KIA on July 29, 1944.

Mick, Ann, Donny, and families. There will be many times when I will think of your dad, grandpa, great grandpa and miss his smile and warm greeting. I got my 1st long time pet cat from Uncle Roly in the barn of his farm when he moved the family from Shawville. And I say; thank you again for all the times you came and helped with shots for her and all the family pets that followed. Uncle Roly accomplished so much in his life right to his last days like witnessing his woodworking talent with pieces he constructed for his family.
God Bless you all. Gillian

Roly was the track vet at our family's Connaught Park back in the hardscrabble days when nobody had any money...except perhaps Roly! I was a young teenager, Roly was about 30, and it seemed he came to work every six months in a new Cadillac. Oh how I wanted to be a vet! Our paths crossed many many times as we made our ways through the racing world and he was always fun to be around. The world needs more people like Roly Armitage.

I wish to convey MY heartfelt and deepest Sympathy to Donny, Glenda, Shawn, and all the family members. Roly was a Hero, Warrior, Family man, Mayor, Vet, Horseman, Author, Legion Member, AND all around goodhearted person.
He gave so much of himself, to everyone.Conversation, Advice, Life Stories Jokes, Tips. He had a large heart, as he gave Love into two marriages. I knew him in 1990, as he married his second wife Karen. I also was married in 1990, and Roly and I became Step Father and Step Mother - to Ryan. He extended his generosity, kindness and advice to all his extended family, which I feel a small part of. He will be missed in the West Carleton community. Roly will make a super hero Angel.
Again, My sympathy to all family. RIP Roly. - Many Hugs from Doris Parks (Cliff Elford-2022 ).

Dear Family - I am so sorry to hear that your Dad has passed away. I have so many happy memories of your parents and always loved when they came to visit my parents either on Dresden Cres. or the cottage. Dede and I loved your Dad like our own. Not only did Dr. Armitage teach me how to read a program at the racetrack, he named a couple of horses after us. Armstead Dede and Armstead Momo. We thought that was so special. RIP Dr. Armitage ….you will be missed so very much.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. Love, Marjorie McCorriston (Green) xo

It was an honour and a privilege to know Roly. We had wonderful conversations about life, his war service and Noordwijk an Zee, Holland. He sent me on a mission to find out what information the museum there had about the Canadians and what they did in 1945. They were thrilled to get to talk with him as they had never spoken to a Canadian soldier who was there. Please let me know if there are any plans for anything in Noordwijk. My deepest condolences to Roly's family. He will be sorely missed.

' Example is an eloquent orator ' . Dr. Roly Armitage's eclectic career was a shining example of a life well lived and spoke volumes about the character of this remarkable man !
Roly is in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame for all the right reasons ....an owner , trainer , driver ,breeder ,administrator , manager, veterinarian , visionary and for 99 years one of horse racing's biggest and best promoters.
Outside of racing Roly was a mayor , an author , an airport manager ,a recipient of both the Order of Ottawa and Order of Ontario and the Queen's Jubilee Medal .
Perhaps most impressive of all was his time spent fighting for our country Canada in World War Two ,landing in Normandy in June ,1944 helping the Allied Forces win the Battle of Normandy .Needless to say Roly Armitage was a decorated war veteran and a hero .
Sincere condolences to the Armitage family with the passing of their indefatigable patriarch and special condolences to my lifelong friend Don Armitage who loved and adored his father with his heart and soul !

Roly was a one of kind individual who led by example and by his huge heart. He had an enormous sense of humor and rural sense of common sense yet worldly in his thinking. Roly once dressed up as a lady of the night complete with fishnet stockings for Halloween at work and went into Carp for lunch much to the amusement of the community. I was honored to be his Treasurer/Director of Finance during his tenure as Mayor of West Carleton and when he led the construction of the complex now named after him was built. Roly was all about community and serving the people which he instilled in the staff. RIP Roly.

We got to know Roly through St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Once we met him, we were fast friends. I always loved chatting with him. Roly was warm, engaging and fascinating. Also he gave the best hugs. We were so excited to see the news story where he connected with the wee Dutch girl and again recently when he proudly represented veterans at Juno Beach. Our Uncle ( Joesph Walsh) died there at 28 and we honour him each year. Sadly, we can’t attend his memorial service as we will be in NS caring for our elderly parents, but we will certainly raise a dram to the legend that is Roly! He put in a good shift! Condolences, Deanna and Jim Walsh
