Obituary of Tina Sykas
It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tina Sykas on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the age of 58. Deeply and dearly missed by her loving husband, Vassilios (Bill) Rounopoulos, and her father, Ioannis Sykas of Athens, Greece.
Survived and beloved by her sister-in-law, Mary (Peter), aunt Ekaterini, cousins Sophia ( Vaggellis), Aggeliki ( Kimonas), Nicko ( Ekaterini), her nephews William and Robert, and extended family in Greece.
Pre-deceased by her mother, Athanasia (nee Christopoulos). Tina was born an only child in Toronto on June 1, 1966, leaving for Greece with her parents at the age of one. She returned to Canada to attend University of Ottawa on scholarship. Tina graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering starting her career at Bell Canada. She then completed several diplomas in computer programming and worked various technical support positions in Ottawa’s high-tech industry. She met her husband and soul mate, Bill, during the March 25th Independence Day dance at the Hellenic Community Center in 2001, and they were inseparable from that point forward.
Tina loved to sing and dance and was really a creative at heart. In addition to being an avid photographer, she was an aspiring author and poet. She was a kind-hearted and loving soul with an infinite capacity of empathy for everyone and everything around her and had a tenacious intolerance for injustice.
Despite waging a determined 14-year struggle with cancer, she ultimately succumbed and passed away peacefully at home.
We would like to thank Dr. John Hiltion, the nurses, and staff at the Ottawa Cancer Center for the wonderful care they provided to Tina.
Visitation will be held at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1315 Prince of Wales Drive on Friday, July 26th, 2024, from noon until the time of Tina’s service at 1PM. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
