Obituary of Christa Jachan (nee Schükerk)
October 25th, 1919 to August 26th, 2024
Christa Jachan passed away peacefully at the age of 104. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend Walter Jachan on December 9th, 2008. Christa was born in Krummbübel/Hirschberg, Schlesien. She came to Canada in May of 1954 at the age of 35. In April 1955, less than a year after arriving in Montreal, Christa met her husband-to-be Walter Jachan - a mechanical engineer and businessman. A few months later, on June 25th they got married.
Living in Montreal, she found a position in the lab of the Royal Victoria Hospital until 1962. In 1963 she immersed herself in pharmacological research in the Department of Investigative Medicine at McGill University and became a published author in that field. In June of 1977 Walter and Christa moved to Ottawa. They both enjoyed travelling, became members of many social groups in the community such as “Frohe Runde” (Happy Circle), The Austrian Society and Saturday night dancing at various establishments. Christa also volunteered once a week at the National Gallery for over 30 years.
Christa was most passionate about being a life-time member of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) since 1967. She attended every AGM all over the USA and took many trips with them until she was well into her 80’s. Even into her 104th year Christa still loved to read her newspaper daily and her monthly AIA magazine from cover to cover with her eyeglasses on and the use of a magnifying glass. Christa was a very intelligent and worldly lady. She had an amazing life.
Special thanks to the staff and friends at Hunt Club Manor where Christa lived for 15 years. Also thank you to the medical staff at TOH General Campus and St. Vincent Palliative Care.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 12th at 11 a.m. at Martin Luther Church, 933 Smyth Road, Ottawa.
